Clover Merchant Gets Caught with Incorrect Surcharging Taxes

We have no idea why this is so complicated.

We get that everyone loves a good surcharge because it nets the processor 150+ basis points of margin for doing nothing.

Fantastic for society, truly payments bros.

But you guys need to learn how to do basic f*cking math.

We understand that you love customers who can’t do math, but the governments are going to come after you.

And rightfully so.

Especially since we’re talking about first grade arithmetic here.

This ticket had a total of $46.75.

Sales tax of 8.25% was then applied to the $46.75 -> $3.86.

BUT THEN THE CUSTOMER IS MADE TO PAY $1.87 AS A 4% SURCHARGE.

That 4% is being calculated on the original $46.75, but the sales tax is NOT BEING APPLIED to the $1.87 in surcharge fees.

It’s just not that complicated.

Clover is pretty widespread with 200K+ installations.

We wonder how pervasive this problem is.

Seems like the state of California is being cheated from $0.15.

But good to know that the processor magnanimously took the maximum allowable 4% surcharge and not some lesser amount to really help the customer out.

Wonder if the customer knows that their credit card rewards program is -3% cash back.
