Reforming Retail

Will We Rethink Restaurant Tech Dynamics after The Restaurant Tech Summit?

At 3:30 PT on August 17 we’ll moderate a panel on the future of POS at the Restaurant Tech Summit, hosted by our friends at The Spoon. It’s a free virtual event (sign up using the link), so chill out.

We’ve been tapped to lead a panel about the future of POS. Panelists include Bryan Solar, GM for Square Restaurants, Matt Niehaus, Head of POS/Payments for Slice, and Amir Hudda, CEO of Qu.

Here are some topics you can expect us to cover:

  • Best-of-breed vs all-in-one: are there logical adjacent bolt-ons that make sense for POS providers, and how is this changing?
  • Direct or channel: what’s the future of POS distribution and how will this change?
  • Future of POS: what features matter in tomorrow’s world, and does that mean POS is no longer the central hub of the business?
  • Free POS can mean 100% ARR loans. When does the ruse end?

There will be a lot of other useful content presented at the conference, including:

  • Digitization of The Restaurant
  • Ghost Kitchens & Virtual Restaurants
  • Delivery & Online Ordering
  • Point of Sale Tech Evolution (this is our panel)
  • The Restaurant Tech Stack
  • Automation & Robotics
  • Personalization & Restaurants

COVID has been a large accelerant for a recalcitrant industry. We think that, like ecommerce before it, the restaurant industry will quickly bifurcate into the haves (Amazon) and have-nots (small businesses), with larger merchants being (relatively more) capable of deploying and managing the technology necessary to maintain market advantages. Smaller restaurants will be at material disadvantages, and maybe even relegated to manufacturing a digital brand’s food in their own kitchen.

We’ll see if content from the Summit changes our perspectives.

Update: here’s the session recording
