Going back to an era before free money muddled things, payment gateways were the glue that connected the sprawling universe of disparate software to the backends of the payment processors. Because the software providers didn’t want to write to 100 different processors (really there were like 8 major backends but there were and still are a lot of major ISOs), and because the processors didn’t want to write to every software provider, gateways were doing the dirty work of connectivity.
But the world has changed drastically.
