Finally, A Use for Credit Cards: College Athletics

There’s perhaps no line of work more ridiculous than college athletics.

Think about it: if you suck at your job, what happens?

You get canned.

And you sure as hell don’t get tens of millions after being shown the door “because”.

But this is exactly how it plays out in the NCAA.

No sooner than you find a forum of seething college fans do you also find an aggrieved aficionado mentioning the dreaded buyout.

You know, the the amount of money owed to a staff member because… yea, there’s no because.

Since 2014, over $1 BILLION has been owed to fired head football coaches.

It’s patently absurd.

But that’s not all.

Because now you have college athletes getting paid through NIL.

Take Arch Manning, a scion of the hailed Manning lineage, and nothing short of the second coming of Christ according to football sycophants.

At least, that was before he actually started at quarterback.

Since starting?

It ain’t good.

Looking at Game on Paper they have data on Manning’s Expected Points Added. Basically, how many points he contributed or lost for his team based on down and distance every time he threw the ball.

This data has his aggregate passing EPA as -35 points, which is last among eligible QBs at #133. On a per play basis, he’s at -0.40 which is #130. So based on this, he actually has a case for being the lowest performing QB in the country with Texas losing nearly half an expected point every time he throws the ball.

Yet Manning had $6.8M in NIL money.

You know what?

If boosters and athletic directs aren’t smart enough to figure out how to write contracts with covenants then they should just pay these people with credit cards.

Why?

Because credit card chargebacks are so damn easy.

File it under reason codes 30 or 53, Services Not Provided or Merchandise Not Received, or Not As Described or Defective Merchandise.

You work the right angle and you’ve got 540 days to file a claim.

That’s almost 1.5 years.

Feels like you’ll know if your money will be better spent on hookers and blow once you’re that far in.

Finally, there’s a use for a credit card: protecting morons who can’t engineer a contract to save their lives.
